Volunteer Work & Your Company

Volunteering; coming together as a community, and helping the local needy. But where do you find the time to donate your time? And actually, it’s really much simpler to get involved when a professional has organized the event.

Consequently companies like Adaptive Marketing LLC, a firm from Connecticut that developed financial benefits programs such as Leisure Exclusives, have stepped up to become points of organization for volunteer activities and helping their employees make time for reaching out. Such initiatives used to be annual activities — in today’s world, so much more can be achieved. Looking at just one company, Adaptive Marketing has provided its staff with the opportunity to take part in everything from tennis shoe recycling efforts to local tree planting events. For events like these, the times, locations and dates of the events were made clear well in advance, making it simple for employees to know what to expect, and how much time it might take precisely.

Making sure volunteers have a say in what programs are available is essential. Firms providing this kind of service to their community like Adaptive Marketing, the developers of the membership program Leisure Exclusives, offer their employees a wide assortment of local activities. You’ll soon see your volunteers working with children, community projects in culture, promoting green initiatives et cetera. The result is that Adaptive Marketing volunteers have the opportunity to find the most effective way to work and have fun getting involved.

Commonly a company-sponsored volunteer project — getting involved with a local school or helping out at a homeless shelter — is either for a one-off event or on a regular schedule in pursuit of a bigger goal. There are people who claim they don’t have the time, but even they can arrange for a Saturday morning park clean-up or the public library’s sale of used books. It’s common practice for firms to help to support the people living near their premises. The activities of the employees at firms like Adaptive Marketing spread precious goodwill throughout the community. Something that volunteer work is guaranteed to do is provide your employees with a reason to feel good, producing a motivated corporate culture.

How We Can Change the Earth for the Better

When you run out of fossil fuels to burn, what will you do with your car? Park it on the side of the road and walk home? Although we don’t know when the oil will run out, science assures us that we’re most likely no longer going to have an oil-based industrial society by the end of the 21st century. We may already have used up half of the oil that was available to humanity, and we’ll use most of what we have left in the next few decades. But there are viable alternatives to oil right now.

The biofuels industry has learned how to efficiently make clean-burning fuels from switchgrass, a low-maintenance plant that grows without much supervision. Switchgrass also produces more biofuel than maize, which is the most popular biofuel crop in production today. We cannot possibly grow enough maize (corn) to run our fleets of cars and trucks, but we can grow more than enough switchgrass and other biofuel-capable grasses in a variety of environments that are not being utilized at this time.

Prolific writer Michael Martinez has proposed that Australia and other nations with large desert areas (including nations in North Africa, Asia, and North America) begin irrigating those desert regions in an article titled “Should man change his environment?”. This radical restructuring of the Earth’s deserts would open up new farmlands, create new industries, and might also help in the fight against global warming. By planting more forests in former desert regions we could tie up a lot of carbon that is now in the atmosphere.

Of course, there is the danger that such large-scale greenification might trigger a new glacial period (what people call an “ice age”) but we already know how to warm the Earth. We can begin to develop the technologies to manage global environments and climates in preparation for colonizing other planets. We’ll need to do something as our population continues to grow anyway. And it’s not like we have a Green Police corps waiting in the wings, ready to teach us how to fix the Earth. We have to work on this together.

Bayer Lets Drospirenone Loose on America in Yaz

Drospirenone is just one of the causes assigned to the outpouring of Yaz side effects reported regularly in America. Drospirenone is an ingredient allegedly unlike other progestins in the United States and was not employed in America before showed up in Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella. Also consider that the Food & Drug Administration released warning letter to the makers of Ocella, Yasmin and Yaz for using low-quality batches of drospirenone from Germany and you have the makings of a cautionary tale involving Big Pharma and its neglect for the people using its pills.

Among the previous contestations impending on Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella birth control, the pills also contain drospirenone, an element not in other oral contraceptives. The British Medical Journal published studies in August 2009 establishing a higher risk of venous blood clots in young women taking drospirenone as opposed to those who used other oral contraceptives. In that same month, the FDA issued an unconnected warning letter to Bayer Pharmaceuticals, makers of Yaz, for using low-quality batches of drospirenone from a plant in Germany. For the benefit of public interest and wellbeing, these articles have been made available free on the internet.

Any women that have been wounded as a result of taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella may be entitled to compensation. Many lawyers and legal aid agencies such as thelegaladvocate.com now offer assistance to anyone going through side effects and health issues as a direct result of using Yaz contraception. Now that more adult females across the United States are coming forward and filing lawsuits, the legal system is moving closer to furnishing justice for those who were misled by the birth control manufacturers and possibly their doctors.

Leading Light in Light Removals

It’s the fourth week in June which can mean only one thing. Wimbledon is here! It’s the half a month in the calendar year when people decide to dust off their tennis rackets, find their whitest of whites and take on the foreseeable rain to rehearse their serve and volley. Man and Van Wimbledon is dedicated to supplying the most efficient and economical service available even when SW19 satiated with tourists. Man and Vans, London’s premier light removal service, is based in South West London and truly likes to help its neighbors with any light removals they may have. Man and Van Wimbledon may be too tied up to enter the courts this summer but here at Man and Vans head office we’re exceedingly excited about Wimbledon’s new Centre Court protective roof. Although Man and Van Wimbledon will labour in the pelting rain, Rafael, Roger and Andy have never been too keen to brave nature’s elements. Thankfully this summer there’ll be no need for Cliff Richards’ services as, from the 17th May, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Association has been using its new retractable roof. Health and Safety tests on the court were guided by the infamous Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters, who enjoyed an exhibition game of mixed doubles as the well timed rain patted the roof as it closed up.

Serious MPM Has no Single Test, because Quite a Few Signs Are Grouped with Other Diseases

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare and fast acting tumor for which no effective remedy has been discovered despite the discovery of many probable genetic targets. The late stage of MPM diagnosis and the long time that connects some exposures and diagnosis have made it tricky to fully evaluate the role of risk factors and the resulting molecular effects.

Many medical centers are now seeing more people with peritoneal mesothelioma. This presents pathologists involved in making the diagnosis with a number of problems, which can be separated into those exposed in making the distinction between malignant mesothelioma and worriless changes and those discovered in separating malignant mesotheliomas from additional forms of epithelial and connective tissue tumours. Immunohistochemistry plays a major role in diagnosing, nevertheless it must be taken into consideration with due regard to the scientific setting and radiological features, and with a knowledge of the vast morphological differentiations existing in mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a cancer affecting the serosal cavities, an anatomic location that is often affected by mets, mostly from primary carcinomas of the lung, breast, and ovary. Progression in immunohistochemistry have lead to improved diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in the differential diagnosis regarding cytological and histological material. As of late, the researchers applied increased levels of throughput technology to the classification of new flags that may aid in being able to tell the difference between mesothelioma from ovarian and peritoneal serous carcinoma, tumors cells that contain closely related histogenesis and antigenic profile. In addition to the improved tools accessible for serosal carcinoma diagnosis, understanding the biology of mesothelioma has been accumulating lately.

Dole, Kemp, Trusting People

Many in the peanut gallery of society are so quick to attack the republican party, out of duty to their side of the sound and fury of human endeavor, however if you are really going to attack people without debating their concepts then in fact you are no better than those you condemn. I recommend to all that you look at both sides and see how similar we really all are. I recommend you go buy the Audio Tape about the Dole-Kemp Plan and play it in your car. If you still wish to blast them personally or the Republican party then at least you will have a better understanding of what you are talking about without making a fool of yourself. Here the name of the audio tape and yes it is also available in CD, I knew you would ask:

Audio Tape Review or Compact Disk; “Trusting the People, The Dole-Kemp Plan to Free the Economy and Create a Better America; By Bob Dole and Jack Kemp.

This is an interesting audio tape in that at the time their logic is as sound as it is today and will always be. Perhaps this is why Bill Clinton’s administration acted more like a Republican Administration during his second term with regards to the economy. The only fall back in the business-economic sense, which has now come to light is the onerous regulatory process that stifled the economy, entrepreneurship and capital investment by business both big and small.

They were right on the money when stating that the American economy rests on the shoulders of small business as it’s foundation. As much of the figures depicted in the book are misquoted or out of context the rational remains the same. Perot often used the figures game and it tended to work by quoting big numbers in the Billions when 10 billion is actually very little when it comes to moving this economy anywhere. Bill Clinton looked better on TV, was able to relate to the people better. That was his strong suit. He was also extremely savvy in his politics.

The Friedman economic views recited in this book are pretty much what is being done now with the Bush Administration and we will see a huge reemergence of the great economic powerhouse we are. I personally agree with most of their advice, although question the 15% reduction in income tax and favor a real low flat tax as designed by Steve Forbes, and a Constitutional Amendment that government live within it’s means. No taxation without representation in the hidden realm of fees, licenses, permits, fines, lawsuits, etc. A tax is a tax, and tea in the bay is still tea that tastes bad. The other disagreement I have with their plan is with regards to FCC Licensing of frequencies. This is unacceptable in that it causes artificial inflation of users and subscribers of those frequencies and therefore is paid by the American people, as business has to move those costs onto the public. In hindsight we can see the problems with the telecoms. In any economy of any value we still see a few underlining necessities in this era: A system of education, Infrastructure, Systems of mass distribution, Communication, Transportation, stable currency and banking system. Communication should be as little cost as possible to insure it is used to the best of its ability and that the most possible users use it. This promotes economic growth. Causing artificial barriers of any sorts such as artificial price inflation through frequency auctions to the highest bidder means the consumer and business user will bare its burden causing inefficiency. Same as a dam restricts water flow, or a toll bridge hurts commerce. If fewer people are using the system of communication due to costs there is a barrier to entry to the world of efficiency thus hurting everything we buy. That is so short sided it is pathetic and moronic. It is so obvious; I for one cannot fathom the in competency here. The billions of dollars paid to the FCC has costs this nations 10xs that in lost efficiency and lost tax revenue for the government due to the slowing of trade, innovation and profits from that very inefficiency.

The FCC is a government agency and with the extra money they will get bigger. Who needs a bigger FCC? Who needs any branch of government any bigger unless it promotes freedom, free markets, or protects our citizenry or people? So in summary I disagree with the figures used for the arguments on the economy, but agree with the basic premises. I strongly disagree with the FCC frequency auctions. The frequencies should go the companies who can best fulfill their duties to all Americans and offer the best trouble free communication to the most markets both large and small. Once it has been determined the best companies to fulfill this mission they should be granted to those companies forthwith and get on with the program as fast as possible thus helping the most amount of people quickest. But the tape was good and the rest was fine. You should listen to it.

The hardest thing for you is going to be proving to yourself that Bill Clinton’s economic policy was bad when we had a hell of a great economic run. It was about the economy then and now and Bill was not stupid and still isn’t. It was not the policies that were so terribly bad it was the regulatory paper tiger run amuck. That was what hurt us. Best to read Ann Rand’s “When Atlas Shrugged” to understand what I mean. Another good book is “The Business End of Government” by Dan Smoot. Since Bob Dole and Jack Kemp did not win the election we will never know and even with this little recession we just got through, I do not see it to be so bad since inflation was also low, but looking for a space to run. Sometimes looking at the recent past can provide guidance for our future, think on this.

Affirmative Action, Is It Good Or Bad?

This article does not discuss the legalities of affirmative action, I leave that to the courts. This article is solely about the philosophy of affirmative action.

According to Wikipedia, affirmative action “is a policy or a program promoting the representation in various systems of people of a group who have traditionally been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society”. In my opinion, affirmative action, at least as it has been instituted in this country, is wrong, harmful, racist and prejudicial. Affirmative action, at least in this country, seems to be based, solely, on race or gender.

In example, take two male high school students, both attend the same low income area high school, one is ‘black’ and one is ‘white’. The ‘black’ student’s family, immigrated to this country from Canada fourteen years ago, his father works full time and his mother is a ’stay at home mom’. The ‘white’ student’s ancestors immigrated to this country eighty years ago, his father was killed, in a home invasion robbery, when he was six years old and his mother works part time as a waitress in a diner. The ‘black’ student has a grade point average of 3.05 with an S.A.T. score of 1085. The ‘white’ student has a grade point average of 3.55 and a S.A.T. score of 1270. Both students are polite and well mannered. Neither belongs to a gang or has any criminal record. Both want to go to a good university so both apply to U.C.L.A.. Under affirmatve action, which student would be accepted? The ‘white’ student would not be covered under affirmative action, as ‘whites’ have not traditionally been discriminated against, and no duty is owed him for being poor and fatherless (being poor and fatherless is not considered disadvantaged and the fact that he attended the same low income school as the ‘black’ student is also not considered a disadvantage for a ‘white’). The ‘black student, however, is considered disadvantaged and is considered to come from a race that has traditionally been discriminated against (The fact that his family recently came here from Canada, the fact that he has a parent that works full time and the fact that he has not suffered racial discrimination does not matter.). Under affirmative action, the ‘black’ student would not only be accepted, he would be eligible for financial aid. The ‘black’ student would go to U.C.L.A. and the ‘white’ student would probably end up at a community college.

Change the above example to a ‘black student and a ‘hispanic’ student and the ‘black’ student would be accepted because ‘blacks’ rank higher on the disadvantaged charts. Between a ‘hispanic’ and a ‘white’ the hispanic would be accepted because ‘whites’ don’t rank on the chart, neither do ‘orientals’, South East Asians or Jews. The fact that Orientals, South East Asians and Jews have been discriminated against in this country doesn’t matter as the ‘political correctness’ police in this country do not consider them, to have traditionally been discriminated against enough, to be disadvantaged. The only student that would be ranked higher on the disadvantaged chart would be a ‘black’ female student. Furthermore, a rich ‘black’ student who attended the best schools would rank the sames as a poor ‘black’ student who attended a low income school.

Some universities are no longer allowed to use affirmative action as a criteria so they now use ‘cultural diversity’ as their criteria. To me affirmative action and cultural diversity are the same thing. Both use racial and gender profiling in order to decide who is accepted. This is America and everyone is supposed to be equal and recieve equal treatment. Racial and gender profiling tells people that some races and females are less capable than others and therefore need special help in reaching their potential. Profiling harms this country by telling people that they are not all equal under the eyes of the law. Profiling tells some people that they are not as intelligent or as capable as other people and that they can’t make it without help. It tells other people that because they are ‘white’, they don’t deserve help. It rewards some people while punishing other people. This divides the country and causes, in effect, class warfare. America is a land of immigrants who should have been melded into one great class of people, Americans. To tell them that ‘blacks’, whites’, ‘hispanics’, ‘orientals’, etc. are all different and have different abilities keeps this country from being united. To grant advantages to one group over another is discriminitory and divisive. To tell ‘blacks’, ‘hispanics’ and others that they can’t make it without outside help is to tell them that that they are not as capable as ‘whites’, ‘orientals’ and others.

Some of you may be wondering why I keep placing single quotation marks around certain words like ‘black’, ‘white’, etc.. It is because I do not like using labels like ‘black’ and ‘white’ to describe people. Other words like ‘hispanic’ are, in my opinion, used improperly as they tend to catagorize people from many different countries or groups into one group. All ‘blacks’ are not the color of black, all ‘whites’ are not the color of white and all ‘hispanics’ are not necessarily of Spain or Spanish speaking (Brazilians, for example, are classified ‘hispanic’ even though they speak Portuguese and most are descended from Portugal or some African country.). As far as I am concerned all people that are American citizens (naturalized or other) or live permanently in the United State Of America are either American citizens or American residents. To label them otherwise is to denigrate, isolate and seperate them from each other. Discussing concepts, like affirmative action and cultural diversity, force the use of such labels.

The people of this country need to be brought together, not seperated. Being proud of your ancestors and your heritage is one thing, being rewarded, punished or seperated because of your ancestors or heritage is something else entirely. Being rewarded because others of your race or gender were mistreated in the past is wrong and being punished for what others of your race or gender did in the past is equally wrong. How would you like to be fined for horse stealing because you are a ‘white’ male and some other ‘white’ male stole a horse over fifty years ago or even last week? Untill all people in this country are treated equally, and with the same respect, and are given the same chances, we will never be “One nation under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all”. Discrimination is wrong, no matter who is being discriminated against.

Note: For any of you that object to my keeping the phrase “under God” in that last quote, tough. That is the way I say it. If you don’t want to say it that way, then don’t. Just don’t try to tell me that I can’t say it that way. To those of you that object to my using the word ‘black’ instead of the words ‘African-American’, again I say tough. To me ‘African-American’ is just as much a misnomer as ‘Hispanic’. I believe that the word ‘black’ is improper, however, I hate to use the word American when there is a hyphen before it. To me an American is an American. I didn’t write this article to be ‘politicaly correct’, I wrote this artice in order to say what I think. If you want ‘political correctness’, go elsewhere.
