European Commission Seeks UK Government’s Reply over BT Phorm Trials

The British Government has received a setback in the Phorm case with the European Commission publicly accusing it of failing to ensure its citizens’ privacy rights in 2006.

Speculation was rife last April that the UK government could be dragged to court over the Phorm trials. Now the Commission has made it clear that if the British lawmakers do not respond satisfactorily to the allegations, it could be taken to the European court. This may lead to the British law possibly being changed.

Taking about the decision, the European Union (EU) Telecoms Commissioner, Viviane Reding, said the privacy of people and the integrity of their personal information is not only an important matter but is also a fundamental right guaranteed under European law.

The British Government’s stand that it was satisfied with the manner in which the Phorm trial was being conducted has left many of its citizens dissatisfied. Critics point out that the idea of making BT customers a part of the broadband internet trials without consulting them was not fair.

The Commission has now written to the Government seeking a reply, which must be given within two months. Commenting on this development a Home Office spokesperson said the UK Government was devoted to maintaining its digital users’ right to privacy and the safety of their personal data. The spokesperson added that the Commission’s letter was under consideration and a reply would be given in due course.

High Speed Internet at 1GB in Public Libraries across Britain

If you walk into any public library in Britain, you are sure to get an internet access. However, according to a recent announcement by the government, the internet speeds available at public libraries in Britain will soon be upgraded. In a few months from now, broadband internet access in public libraries will be faster than the fastest fibre-optic home connection.

According to the terms of a new deal signed by the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), local authorities across Britain will experience a digital upgrade from their standard connection to the ‘Janet’ network, which is an enhanced computer network funded by The British government. This network is solely dedicated to research and education, and it offers speeds of up to 1gigabyte. Once public libraries make this upgrade, they will experience speeds that are ten times faster than what they are getting now.

In a recent comment, MLA chief executive Roy Clare said that ‘Janet’ network will be the next big thing to happen in the field of public libraries after the “People’s Network”. However, there is no compulsion that libraries must compulsorily upgrade to the new network. Yet Clare believes that an upgrade will be a boon for users.

In a recent interview, Jane Finnis, publisher of the Culture24 website, said that free internet access in public libraries was a natural outcome of the digital revolution in Britain. It was destined to happen sooner or later, and now with the new Janet network, users will have both a better browsing and surfing experience and a chance to engage in social and interactive activities in the virtual domain.

Advertising Agencies’ Hope of Extra Revenue from Mobile Broadband Not Fulfilled

Mobile broadband services are one of the most popular services in the telecom sector and their popularity is growing remarkably. This sector is experiencing exponential growth and by the year 2017 it is expected to register a whopping forty times growth. While this growth is good news for the industry, many have started raising doubts about the capability of the existing network to cope up with this seemingly ever-rising demand for mobile broadband services.

This growth in the mobile broadband sector has made it a new channel for advertising. With such a large number of users, this can also be a comparatively inexpensive mode of advertising. Presuming this, many broadband service providers have tried to sell advertising space on their connection dashboards. This ensures that each time a user connects to the internet, the message or the ad is displayed.

Unfortunately, this method of advertising has failed to catch up with the consumers and consequently the revenue earning has not been according to expectations.

People had initially predicted that along with popularity of mobile broadband services, advertising earnings would also grow. However, this has not been the case. In ‘More than Talk… The Future of Mobile’ - an eForum Keynote Seminar organised at Westminster - the advertising industry tried to discuss the issue.

At the seminar, the managing partner at media agency agenda21digital explained that the revenues from advertising on the net have been abysmally low and that the agency does not see any hope of the situation improving in the near future.

If you choose to opt for mobile internet pay as you go and look through Mobile Broadband Genie, you’ll be given all the information you need about the performance of each supplier on their easy to use comparison table to help you choose the best mobile broadband deal for you.

Virgin Media Makes Changes to Help Customers

The recent report from Ofcom has encouraged Virgin Media to ensure more transparency in its internet service. Ofcom report said that many service providers seem to be making claims regarding internet speeds that they cannot actually provide. Virgin Media has thus decided to revamp its advertising strategy to ensure that all its ADSL broadband products state the exact maximum speed they can provide, otherwise the company will state that it will provide whatever speed is possible for it to provide. The aim is to remove unrealistic claims regarding speeds (click for a broadband speed check) that greatly deceive the customers.

When asked about this new plan, the company’s Chief Executive Officer Neil Berkett replied that consumers often get confused and misled by advertisements. He added that Virgin Media’s new National Broadband Speed Promise will help customers in making their decision before taking a connection, and this will raise the bars for the standard of transparency.

The company has also increased the download speed of its network to 20Mb. It has started a mobile broadband offer as well under which 1GB data can be downloaded at a price of £5. This offer is open to all its national broadband customers. More importantly, it has done away with the need to take a separate line from any other service provider as its customers can now get direct lines from the company itself.

Using VoIP for Your Business

Communication is important for us. Since the development of the internet, it has made communication faster and more efficient by using emails.

With this technology, researchers and developers invented the Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short. VoIP works like your regular landline phone, but instead of using telephone lines, VoIP uses the internet to transmit voice and video data to the person you are calling. With VoIP, it is possible to make free or cheap long distance calls.

VoIP not only enable us to call long distance free, but also lets us view the person we are calling with the use of a webcam or videophone.

With free long distance calls and conferencing, VoIP benefits businesses in many ways. Many features offered by VoIP free or at a minimal cost enabled VoIP literally replace traditional phones.

VoIP is probably the best way to keep in touch with your business associates and customers.

With VoIP it can make your business, either small or large, have an edge against your competitors.

Here are some features that can benefit your business by using VoIP:

With video conferencing capabilities, you can conduct meetings and presentation right in your own office. No longer will you spend expensive travel expenses when using VoIP. It allows you to close deals with your customers a lot faster than before.

Save money on phone bills. With VoIP, this is possible. You will just pay your monthly internet connection bills and small fees to your VoIP internet service provider allowing more profits for your business.

Not only that VoIP is limited to calling other VoIP phones, but it also allows you to call mobile phones, regular phones, and long distance or international numbers for a very low cost.

With the technology to take your own personal VoIP number, it is possible to make and receive calls anywhere you are in the planet as long as there is an internet connection. This feature allows you to not miss any business opportunities or emergencies while you travel.

This means more business deals, therefore, more profits and also you can take care of your clients while you travel, answering their important questions about your products or services.

A business wants to minimize expenses in order to gain more profit, therefore allowing the business to grow. With VoIP, it can significantly cut your phone expenses, traveling expenses, and more.

However, no matter how many great features VoIP offer, it still depends on your internet connection. If you plan to integrate VoIP in your business, be sure your internet connection is high speed and reliable in order to prevent voice delays or being cut off.

Remember that good communication is crucial for a business to succeed, meaning that a voice lag can mean the difference of an answer to your business associates or clients. A one-second delay may not seem much but it can make the difference of a simple “yes” or “no” answer. This can lead to misunderstanding, therefore, possible of not making the deal.

Choosing the VoIP service provider is also an important factor for your business. Choose one that offers maximum voice quality and reliability.

Also, remember that features such as caller ID, call waiting, speed dialing, call forwarding, video phone, voice mails, call logs, conference calls, long distance or international calls, and call hold should be offered cheap or no fee at all.

Bob Hett has extensively covered the VoIP Service Provider industry as an analyst and has researched the various companies for factors based on price, reliability, support and overall quality. Learn more at VoIP for Business

Kids Mobile Phones

Did you know that more than half of the children in the UK who are aged between five and nine now own a mobile phone. This is a situation even though there are a number of warnings about the potential long-term health effects that the use of mobile phones can have on young children. It is believed that their mental and physical health could be affected in a negative way.

At the end of this year a major mobile phone network is believed to be launching a range of recycled mobile phones which then designed to children as young as the age of four. The network has made claims that its handsets are safer and smarter than any that have come before it.

The current government guidelines on mobile phone use no longer focus on adults, however they still warn that the use of mobile phones by children could well affect their brains. The leader of the government is bath and safety research and a professor of physics, has confirmed that there is no way that parents should allow their children to have a mobile phone before they reach secondary school age. In addition once they have reached the stage parents are being encouraged to tell their children to send texts to each other instead of making calls. The reason being that text thing does not expose their brains to as higher levels of electromagnetic radiation as making telephone calls from mobile phones.

This advice is based on the fact that children’s brains react differently to ionising radiation, radioactivity and gamma rays. As with most things because children’s bodies are less developed if they’re exposed to harmful radiation when a young they are much more likely to get some form of cancer than if there are exposed as an adult.

The study was conducted at a university hospital in Sweden last year and the findings indicated that children who use mobile phones were five times more likely to develop brain cancer than those who didn’t.

BT Launches New Package for Business Customers

Business broadband users now have a bouquet of digital communication options from BT for £30 a month. On offer are different call, broadband, and mobile options that could prove more cost-effective and help beat the recession.

The business broadband bundle just launched by BT seeks to empower UK businesses with multiple communication channels, allowing them to call UK landlines, UK mobile numbers, as well as several destinations worldwide. This move is meant to facilitate high-value low-cost communication, which could spur growth for BT’s customers.

An assortment of new BT One Plan call packages were also released recently. They offer calls to UK mobiles and landlines, and international calls for a flat monthly rate starting from £5.

With the combination of the new high-value broadband bundle and BT One Plan packages, BT hopes to let British businesses put together their own BT communication packages with varying broadband, call, and mobile alternatives. This combination is more economical than individually subscribing to each service, and the total monthly communication bills could come down significantly.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, said that in these difficult times, BT wants to aid UK businesses in managing their communication budget with a fixed low cost package that they can define depending on their needs.

BT is relying on its impressive service and support systems to enhance the appeal of the £30 broadband bundle. A single number will deal with all enquiries and services, and the customer will get a single bill covering all the services he has availed of under the BT Business One Plan.

BT business broadband claims 99.99 per cent reliability of its service, and answering of 95% of calls made to its help desk within half a minute. Moreover, nine out of ten problems are rectified within four hours of the complaint, the company says.

Tiscali Buy-out Hits a Hurdle

Contrary to the prior market belief, it seems that BSkyB isn’t interested in taking-over Tiscali’s struggling UK business anymore. Recently, Mario Rosso, CEO, Tiscali, had announced that serious negotiations were underway with a prominent ISP (Internet Service Provider) and an acquisition would be soon finalised. It was further revealed that BSkyB (i.e. Sky Broadband) was willing to takeover the UK-based broadband division of Tiscali.

However, now it seems that the deal will not go ahead, and it is believed that one major factor that has forced BSkyB to change its decision is the continuing downward trend in the global markets. Further, the declining value of the Sterling (GBP) has made the deal a difficult proposition for BSkyB. The news has only worsened things as the value of Tiscali’s shares crashed as the news of BSkyB’s refusal reached the stock market and they now lie suspended from trading. Things are bound to get difficult for Tiscali, as it was already struggling to maintain its position in the broadband market. It is largely believed that the broadband major doesn’t have anything substantial left in its portfolio to invite fresh investments in the near future something it badly needs.

Other competitors in the UK broadband market are sure to use this opportunity to poach Tiscali’s existing customersby offering cheaper and better broadband deals (more on broadband deals). Tiscali’s share in the market is set to decline as it searches for a solution to bail itself out of the current mess. Soon after the BSkyB debacle, Tiscali officials were heard commenting that they would re-negotiate with their current creditors to ensure that the company debt, which is pegged at £458 million, is somehow diluted.
