Google Sitemaps Just Got Better

Having a Google Sitemap just got better! Not only does the search engine company check your sitemap, but now they give you feedback! The new feature was quickly noticed by many users of the service recently as a way for Google to alert the webmaster about possible problem pages that they have had trouble indexing.

I had the wonderful experience of getting to know this service first hand when I logged in to Google Sitemaps to check on the status of one of my many sitemaps. Along side of the address for the sitemap, there was a link with the anchor text “verify”. This helps Google to know that you are the actual webmaster for that site and is a wonderful addition for security.

Once you are verified (which is a simple process of creating a page on your root directory that they will see) you are able to see the stats for the site index. Often times, you won’t see anything in the stats area, but if you have recently updated, redesigned, or deleted certain pages that Google has in its index, you have a good chance of seeing something there. Google will tell you about possible errors in the indexing process such as pages that are not showing, or pages that they can’t see.

You might already be familiar with the new Google Sitemap Program, but if you aren’t here’s a quick synopsis. The Sitemaps program is a new offering from the Google family and is currently in beta testing.

The goal of the program is to allow Google to see the complete sitemap or a sitemap of frequently changing pages. This is extremely helpful if you have links that can’t be reached by the Googlebot when it’s indexing your page due to things like Java script menus and such. The codes on a page that prevent the bot from viewing your site ultimately hinder you in the search engines.

So using the XML standard coding language, which is easy to understand once you get the hang of it, you create a log of the various pages on your site and tell Google some attributes about it such as the overall priority of the page, how frequently you alter the content, when the page was updated last, and of course its location.

This will give Google the overall picture of the layout of your site and does help in getting the pages indexed for greater relevancy. Choosing Keywords To Attract Buyers

The wrong keywords bring lookers; the right ones bring willing buyers. Keywords are how search engines index and classify your website. Keywords are at the heart of any search engine optimization (SEO) campaign. Choosing the right keyword phrases for your website is critical to success. The right keywords will bring targeted traffic.

All of your other SEO strategies won’t help you at all if you choose the wrong keywords. This is because all these strategies are built on top of the keywords.

So how do you pick the right keywords? You have to think like your customer. People search for solutions to what they need. They look for the product or service that satisfies their need. They do this more often than looking for the person who supplies the service.

If a business owner is looking for help with their business, they search for business consulting rather than a business consultant. A person will search for carpet cleaning much more often then carpet cleaners.

If your products or services are local or regional, be sure to include your state or city within your search phrases. People will search for area codes and zip codes when looking for local suppliers.

To create a list for your website’s keywords, start with listing out your company’s products and services. Use the language that your customers would use. A frequent mistake is to use language from the industry you are in. People who sell booths for exhibitions refer to them as “pop up displays”. Yet their customers will search for “trade show displays” four times more often.

Competitors are a great source of intelligence. Go to your competitor’s websites and look at what terms or keyword phrases they are using. Look at their keywords Meta Tag, and read through their page text. What specific search terms are being used?

If you currently have a website, analyze how your visitors are finding you.. Look at your website statistics and see what search terms are generating traffic. Most hosting companies provide you the ability to analyze your website’s log files. We recommend using a log file analyzer such as AwStats, Webalizer or Urchin. The new Google Analytics are another great tool.

There are a number of good keyword research tools available to help in selecting the right phrases. An excellent one is Wordtracker (www.wordtracker.com). Wordtracker has allows you to search a Thesaurus that will list keywords that you may not have considered. They show daily search volume and the number of competing web pages by search engine. There is a charge for this service, but it is well worth it.

There are several free tools available such as Overture (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion) and Google Adwords (https://adwords.google.com/select/main).

Buyer vs. researcher: Is you website an informational website? Then you want to attract researchers. Are you selling a product or service? Then you want to attract buyers. Researchers tend to use general keywords and buyers tend to use very specific keywords.

The Buying Cycle has three phases. Let’s show how this can work with someone looking for video games:

1.Research: People gather information to learn what is new, latest trends and what is popular. They are looking to learn and gather information. They will tend to use general terms such as ” Video Games”

2.Shop: In this phase they are comparing and narrowing their choices. They are looking at availability, pricing, shipping, etc. Buyers in this stage reveal their preferences, so more specific keywords (for example, “Video Games Xbox 360″) are needed to cover all possible search terms.

3.Buy: Visitors have now decided on what they want and are now looking to purchase. They usually are looking for a specific product or a model number. The keywords you use to attract buyers at this stage are very specific; for example they may search for: “XB360 Call of Duty 2″.

Buyers tend to use highly specific phrases as well as singular rather than plural forms. A person looking for new furniture is more likely to type in “leather sofa” rather than “leather sofas”

It may be tempting to go after the general high volume keyword, but this usually isn’t a good idea. Many times the websites that rank well for the general term are not the ones that actually close the sale. They educate the buyer only to lose the sale to someone else who chose more specific keywords.

More specific keyword phrases almost always have fewer competitors and it is much faster to get top rankings.

Once you choose your keywords, place them strategically and prominently on your web pages. Make sure they are used in a natural way and make good marketing sense. The language you use needs to be action oriented to convince your visitors to buy.

How often should these keywords be looked at? We recommend analyzing your website every 6 months. The markets change, traffic patterns shift and what works today, may not work tomorrow.

8 Easy Ways to Optimize Your Website

Traffic from search engines is widely considered the best (and cheapest) way to generate traffic to your site. The increasing popularity of search engines has led to the development of a whole industry that revolves around ways to “optimize” websites.

The end result is that many people now think that only “professionals” can help their website rank high within search engines. But, the truth is that anyone can structure their site so they rank high for many keywords.

Below, I have listed 8 simple steps that you can take to optimize your web pages. By following these, you will improve your chances of increasing your rankings:

1) Target one word for each page: A huge mistake that many beginners make is cramming numerous keywords onto every page. Instead of doing this, you should focus on one specific keyword for each page. That way, you can make sure that the page is focusing on that one word without any distractions. If you want to target multiple keywords then it is necessary to create a separate page for each.

2) List your major keywords in the links back to your site: Many search engines, Google being the most famous, have started to take into account the words that are mentioned in the title tag of the links that point to your site. So, a great way to improve your rankings for your keywords is to place it in the title tag.

3) Make your first 100 words on the page keyword rich: Another mistake that most webmasters make is to have a menu on the left-hand side of a website. Since search engines primarily focus on the first 100 words of a website, a left side menu is a misuse of valuable space.

Instead of doing this, you should have your title, description and web copy within the first 100 words of your site. An easy way to do this is to have your menu on the right instead of the standard left-hand side.

But, since the left-handed menu is now commonplace, you can also choose to put your first 100 words above the left-handed menu, so this text will be the first thing read on your website.

4) Insert the keyword into your title tag: In the source code of most pages are “header tags” (also known as Meta tags), which help search engines understand the content of the page.

To fully optimize your website, you can tweak the source code of the page. The first step is to insert the keyword in the title tag. (This is what is shown in the results of a search engine when your site is listed)

5) Insert your keywords in the description tag: The description Meta tag is almost as valuable as the title tag. The information in this tag is listed directly below the title tag in search engine results. As a result, a good description can make your website stand out from other listings. To get the prospect to click on your site, it is important to write a snappy description while using your keyword.

6) Insert them into your keywords tag: Like the title and description tags, keyword tags are used to help search engines understand the content of your web page. Although this Meta tag has become less popular, it doesn’t hurt to put your keywords here.

7) Place your keyword in the header: When writing the actual text of your site, the first part should be the headline. Whenever a search engine scans your site, it rates all words in the headline as being more important then the rest of the web copy. To take advantage of this, you should have your keyword in the page headline. But, since the header tag (h1) is quite large, you should format it so that it is smaller.

8) Write your keyword enriched web copy: Now that you have set up the structure of your page, you can write your web copy. While creating the text, you want to include the majority of the keywords at the top and the bottom of the page. In addition, the keyword should be included a few times in the middle. Basically, the common saying is that the keyword density should resemble an hour glass shape.

The total web copy of your page should be about 300-500 words. Also, the keyword should be included about 5-12% of the total words of the page. The percentage varies according to each search engine, so you might want to play around till you find the best results.

If you follow all these steps, you will definitely see an improvement in the search engine rankings for your keywords. The best part is that you do not have to spend any money on the expensive search engine optimizers!

When people think of search engine optimization, they immediately think of time consuming very tedious tasks that are way beyond their capabilities. That might be true if they put no time and effort into it. I do agree that improving search engine rankings in competitive niche markets require a good deal of knowledge and expertise. It’s TIME to learn the basics of how to improve your search engine rankings. There is huge need for search engine optimization experts, but most websites don’t find themselves in a very competitive niche market. Let me lay out the basics of search engine optimization. You can find a professional to do it but some professionals charge thousands to even get your foot in the door. Others have you fill out lengthy quote requests and tell you they’ll be back in about three days with a quote. Then you wait for three days, and no email shows up. It might be worthwhile trying these basics out before paying an expert.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the process of coding a website to achieve top rankings in the search engines. You must concentrate on the website’s most relevant keywords. These relevant keywords are the key phrases that people are most likely to type into the search engine to look for websites. These websites must present their products and services within a twenty second period to ensure that the visitor locks into their site. Let me give you a scenario that happens far too many times. Let’s say you are looking for a great hosting company. You type in your favorite search engine and enter a few keywords: cheap hosting. You get thousands upon thousands of websites. What the search engine displays to you makes you decide whether or not to click on it. When you finally decide to click on it, how many times have you seen Google “adwords” throughout the whole left side in no particular format? How many times have you seen affiliate product advertising on the whole right side in no particular format? Goodbye! What could have been an easy sell turned out to be an easy click out of your website. This is not what you are trying to achieve.

The first step for search engine optimization is to choose the most suitable keywords for your site. Make a list of the most suitable keywords for your site and then split one or two of them to each suitable page within the site. One keyword per page is preferable, but two per page is not so bad. Sometimes it is useful to split a large page into two smaller pages so that a different keyword can be targeted on each page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Matching keywords to a page’s content is essential. A search engine robot and spider has caught on to all the tricks. Don’t try to outsmart it.

Basic Search Engine Optimization Structure is vital to your success.

An obvious and overlooked aspect of search engine optimization is to make sure that search engine spiders can actually crawl to all of your website’s pages. If the spiders and robots can’t find them, then they won’t get indexed, and we’ve wasted a lot of time on search engine optimization. Make sure that your navigation structure of your website is strong. Would you build a mansion on a one inch foundation? Probably not! Then why build your website mansion on a weak foundation. This means that all of your pages are linked together on every page. When the spider crawls throughout your website, it will crawl to all of the pages and back again. If there is one broken link, this could affect your search engine rankings!

Don’t forget the not so obvious:

•Robots and Spiders can’t see links embedded in Java and most times Flash. When a spider and a robot crawls over your website, it only reads the text, and those embedded links are invisible to the spiders and robots far as search engines are concerned, they don’t exist. Let’s make a promise not to use them.

•How many times have you clicked on a link and looked at the URL, and it contained about 32 extra letters and numbers in it? Google won’t spider any URL that looks like this. Avoid using dynamic URLs.

•Make sure all pages link to at least one other page. Links to pages that don’t link out are called “dangling links”. Google founders, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, once wrote about Dangling links

“Dangling links are simply links that point to any page with no outgoing links. They affect the model because it is not clear where their weight should be distributed, and there are a large number of them. Often these dangling links are simply pages that we have not downloaded yet……….Because dangling links do not affect the ranking of any other page directly, we simply remove them from the system until all the PageRanks are calculated. After all the PageRanks are calculated they can be added back in without affecting things significantly.” -

•It is good to structure the internal links so that targeted keywords are reinforced. For example, organize the links so that a topic’s sub-topic pages link to the topic page with the right link text (see below), and vice-versa.

Off-page elements

This is one of the two most important elements for good rankings. The link text can be on pages within your website or on other websites. Either way, it is essential. Your main keyword should be the text link or included in the text link. When possible, include the target page’s main keywords in the link text, but don’t use the exact same link text for every link that links to a page.

I always use Google as the example since they are the number one search engine today. Google attributes link text to the target page and attributes it as actually being on the target page. It treats its presence as being an important element of the target page. Links carry more weight if the text around them is concerned with the target page’s topic and keywords.

On-page elements

The Title tag
title>Type in your title words here

This is the second of the two most important elements for good rankings. Make sure that the page’s keywords are contained in this tag, and place it near the front. I like taking the actual main keyword and placing it by itself with a period behind it and then explain the Title Tag. For example, let’s say I own Google and I’ve reached the Adwords page. I would title it like this:

“Adwords. Google’s Adwords offers a pay per click solution for all your advertising needs.”

The target keyword is “Adwords”. Each page’s Title tag should be different to the Title tags on the site’s other pages.

The Description tag

Most search engines display the description of your website so it’s important you write an appealing description for your page and fill it full of the keywords that are contained within your actual site. Remember that list of keywords that you should have listed for your website. A search engine spider should see every one of those keywords in your actual page. Your Description tag should have most of those words. Google doesn’t display the Description like they used to do but that’s what I love about Google. They always keep the SEO’s guessing what’s next? Just when you think the robots and spiders don’t care for the description, Google displays it.

The Keywords tag

I was just reading a popular keyword site that delivers the best possible keywords for your website. Then, they say enter each keyword and separate them with a comma. Do not separate these words with a comma. There is no need to separate them because the search engines ignore the commas. The words in the Keywords tag were never treated as keywords by the search engines; they were treated as text on the page. I keep hearing that the keyword tag is not as effective as it used to be, and then I’ll click a link and it says it’s an absolute. My advice to you is to put plenty of relevant keywords into the tag and include the keyword once at the front, and a second time further along the line. Do me a favor and do yourself a favor? Do not repeat a word more than 5 times. If you do, the search engines will think you are spamming them and they will drop you quick.

The H tag

Hn>Insert your headings or your titles of your text here

Notice the . The “H” stands for headings throughout your text and the “n” stands for the text size from 1 to 6. The smallest is 6 and the biggest heading size is 1. H tags are given more weight than ordinary text and, the bigger the H size, the more weight it receives. So include the target keyword in H tags at least once on the page, and two or three times if possible. Also, place the first H tag as near to the top of the page as possible.

Bold text

Bold text is given more weight than ordinary text but not as much as H tags. As much as is reasonable, enclose the keyword in bold tags when it appears on the page.

Text

The body should be easy to read with a very clean layout. Remember when I visited the hosting sites, and they have Adwords on the left, and they have the affiliate products on the right, and their actual text or body is 10 inches below. Let’s cut out all the extra stuff. Treat your website as an entity. When you do that, buyers will remain on your website. Perfect! You have achieved your goal of getting traffic to stay.

In your text, use the main keywords as often as you can on the page without messing with this clean user-friendly layout.. Use the term once or twice very early in the page’s body text and as often as possible throughout. Reword small parts and even add sentences to make sure that the keyword is well represented in the text.

In all probability, each word in the keyword will be found on the page separate from the keyword itself. This is good. In fact, if they are not there on their own, add a few of them through the page.

Alt text

Alt-text is simple. Blind people have speech synthesizers that read pictures. The only way the blind person will be able to “hear” the picture is if you included the Alt-text. This is the text you see on pictures when you mouse over it. Guess what? Include the keywords in the alt text of all images on the page. Not to mention that this could definitely help your search engine rankings.

Summary

Make a list of keywords for your site. Rank the popularity of the keywords because that’s what your visitor will type in the Search Engines.

Make sure each page of your website has at least one major keyword and split some pages if necessary

Make sure the links and link text contain your target keywords
If possible, organize links from other sites to suit the target keywords and their pages.

Organize all the on-page elements to suit each page’s target keyword.

Relax and shoot for number one rankings.
