In the old days of the internet, links were the primary communication path between web sites. Search engines were not as sophisticated as today, and search results rather crude. Actually, even today links are reported to be more used than search engine results; but the latter are increasing their share. In a way, this began to change when Google entered the scene. In an effort to make search results more relevant, Google implemented an algoritm that judged the quality of a web site by the number of other sites linking to it. It seemed rather obvious that a popular, much linked-to, site should be of higher relevance than a site with few links pointing to it.

Unfortunately, as webmasters realized this a frantic stampede began. Everybody did whatever they could to secure as many incoming links as possible. One example: In my own field, web hosting reviews, there is a site that has (according to Yahoo) 4,000,000 incoming links pointing to it! Yes, FOUR MILLION links! By comparison, Microsoft.com has only about 3,000,000 incoming links!

I won’t speculate on just how those 4,000,000 links were collected, but surely it can’t have been by manually asking those 4,000,000 webmasters for a link exchange! And I also doubt that the 4,000,000 webmasters just spontaneously thought “Wow, I will put up a link to this cool web hosting review site”! Yes, even cooler than Microsoft.com, evidently.

As we all know now, Google got tired of having its search results manipulated in this way. So they tweaked their ranking algoritms (one tweak widely known as the dreaded “Florida Update”), to put an end to these methods. They started actively punishing web sites that were caught using devices such as “Free For All” link exchange sites, and implemented many other measures also; too many to mention here.

So, getting many inbound links is a dead concept now? That is what some people claim, but they are wrong! What IS dead is the idea that links are nothing but search engine food. Rather, we are getting back in the direction of the good ol’ days, when links were not there just to bait the search bots. Some folks may have forgotten that links really are there to serve as paths of communication for Real People. Inbound links to a web site means paths for humans to enter, and browse the content. And that is what all of us webmasters want: VISITORS!

This also means: stop trying to manipulate search engines. Keep your directory of links, if it does provide some real value to visitors. But if those links are just a messy jumble, hidden somewhere in a dusty corner of your site - repent! Get those links out of the closet, let them breathe some fresh air!

Many individuals may feel that high school is not for them and they would prefer to get a GED and enter the workforce early. Not passing in homework and being late or absent to classes does not hurt anyone but the student and their grade. A person that is getting their GED misses out in this important life lesson.

Another reason a GED is not such a great option is if the individual is going to apply for college, they may have a difficult time. Colleges will want to see the student’s high school transcripts and when they see they dropped out and received their GED, they may look a little harder at their potential student. Will the student be able to get through the classes without dropping out? Will the students fully apply themselves? The colleges will look at this GED student closer than others.

While the GED will allow you to get a job and even go to college, it does not provide you with the full education you deserve. A high school diploma requires you to complete a set of courses designed to give you an education in several subject areas, as well as allowing you to enhance them with enrichment classes and extra-curricula activities. By getting your GED, you’re missing out on a lot of great information and experiences.

My first mentor, Mr. Shoaff, over a six-year period from the time I was 25 to age 31, taught me some extraordinarily simple things, before his untimely passing at age 49. He only went through the 9th grade in school. He never finished high school, never went to college, never went to a university. So he put his experiences and ideas in very simple language, which, I think for me - kid from the farms of Idaho - was so important. When I would say, “This is all the company pays.” Mr. Shoaff would say, “No, that is all they pay You.” I thought, “That is a new to look at it.” I told him things cost too much. But he said, “No, you can’t afford them.”

Well, that was a new concept for me. He promised that if I would improve, then I would qualify for more money. So I learned that we don’t have to work on the company, we have to work on ourselves. Now if it had been technical, I would have missed it. If it had been mystic, I would have backed away. But it was just basic, blunt “a-b-c” stuff that I hadn’t thought of before. For me it was the beginning of what he called “personal development”.

Mr. Shoaff also taught me that life puts some of the more valuable things on the high shelf so that you can’t get to them until you qualify. If you want the things on the high shelf, you must stand on the books you read. With every book you read, you get to stand a little higher.

And the “biggie” that forever had an impact on me, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” That phrase changed my life. Success is not to be pursued, but to be attracted by the person you become. Put your energy into becoming a better you, the best you. Learn the skills. Practice the skills. Attract the success.

Goal setting is easy. Achieving your goals is the challenge. Below are 10
techniques you can use to help you achieve your goals. Practice these goal setting techniques everyday and you just might be surprised how easy it becomes to accomplish your goals.

1. Dream great dreams and make them come true.

Studies show that people who visualize “aggressively” are more successful at
achieving their goals. Visualize the end-result of your dream. What does it look like?
How will you feel when you get what you want? What color, size, shape, etc., it is?
You must be able to mentally visualize your goal as clear and concise as possible
then it is possible to achieve it. Keep it on your mind every day. In time your sub-
conscious will take over.

2. Believe that you can do it.

You must believe in yourself. If you do not then read positive thinking books. Take a
class at your community college that will enhance your skills. Surround yourself with
people who are winners and will encourage you. Many successful people accomplish
their goals even though in the beginning they didn’t know everything needed to
succeed. They believed that they could do it and they did. When you get stuck or
have doubts push yourself to do it anyway one step at a time. Get a support partner
who is willing to be there for you when you have doubts.

3. Embrace change

Change is the Key to Success. Nothing happens until we make a change and do
something different. Good examples are working professionals who experience a
layoff. Once they get over the shock, hurt, anger, and frustration of being let go
they plan their strategy for their next job. Most of the time the new job is better,
more challenging, and more money than their previous job. Embrace change and
great things can happen.

4. Enthusiasm is contagious.

Surround yourself with enthusiastic people and let some of that energy rub off on
you. You can accomplish more when you have high energy. Pay attention to your
emotions the next time you are with an enthusiastic go-getter: You will get more
done and you can be more than you imagined.

5. Maintain a positive attitude.

Have you ever wondered why there are “blue Mondays” and “happy Fridays” at work?
It is because we made it that way! If we were to change our attitude towards
Mondays, such as have a casual dress day on Monday or bring in snacks, wouldn’t
that change our attitude? The choice is yoursbe positive. Create things in your life
that will help you maintain a happy outlook in life. Everyday must be a TGIF (Thank
Goodness it’s Friday) day.

6. Keep on going. Never give up.

Procrastination is the enemy. Break the habit of putting things off. Do things right
away. Always assume that you must do it now, as tomorrow will be too late. Do not
allow obstacles to stop you from accomplishing your next step. Get help. Talk to a
friend. Find someone who can help you reach your next step. Do it right away to
prevent you from getting discouraged.

7. Keep failure in perspective.

There is no failure except in not trying. Do not allow anyone to discourage you from
achieving your goal if you believe in it, including yourself. Judge yourself by the
number of times you succeed, not by the number of times you fail.

8. Focus on winning.

Persistence and determination are the traits of winners. People who triumph in life
refuse to be defeated. When someone says you can’t do it, what is your feeling? How
do you react? Let no one discourage youespecially you!

9. Work with winners.

Be loyal and stand with the people who believe in you. Ask for help and advice when
needed. Support others dreams and goals. Surround yourself with like-minded
people who want to see you win.

10. Just DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

Take a risk and do it. Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Don’t wait until you think you
know everything. Take a deep breath, jump in and do it!

Identify one of the above activities that is the most difficult for you to accomplish
and work on it for one month. It will be painful at first but you will be surprised
how easy it gets to be if you work on it everyday. Before you know it accomplishing
your goals will become easier and easier.
